The Sustainable Souls Project January 2017

Hi...

Welcome to January and welcome to my first The Sustainable Souls Project post.

Before I get to my project and how I was inspired, let me give you a bit of history on how The Sustainable Souls Project was born and what to expect each month.

The Sustainable Souls Project evolved from my yearly discovery of a single word.  Each year, I choose a word to define my hopes, focus, and desires for the next 365 days.  Past words have included: home, explore, be, and others.

This year, I chose the word, 'Sustainability'.  Because the earth is in dire need of help and I want to leave a legacy for my children and their children to inherit, I thought it was time to focus on issues of Sustainability.

But I wanted to make 2017 different.  I wanted to include others in my word, since Sustainability cannot be done alone.  Yes, every small action helps, but it's the combination of hundreds of small acts that make a difference.  Hence, The Sustainable Souls Project.

Each month, we will pick a sustainability topic and create awareness through art.  Projects may include art journaling, mixed media, assemblage, and more.  We are hoping to educate, entertain, and create awareness, one paint stroke at a time.

January's theme is 'We are all connected'.  Think eco-systems and planet earth.  This quote by Neil DeGrasse Tyson says it perfectly.

"We are all connected; To each other, biologically. To the earth, chemically. To the rest of the universe atomically."

I used several aspects of this month's theme as inspiration for my main project.  I have a deep connection to this piece.  Creating with Sustainability in mind is opening my heart and head to the universe.  I am excited to see what changes happen this year and how I am able to incorporated Sustainability into my way of life.

In addition to my main art piece each month, I will be creating a smaller piece that will be combined with 11 others to create ONE large piece.  Here's a peek at my January contribution.

Want to do more?  Want to be a Sustainable Soul?  Want to create with us each month?  Send me a message and I'll provide more details.

Here's a peek at what the other Sustainable Souls created this month.

If you can't create with us each month but would like to support and participate in our quest for a Sustainable future, please feel free to grab our badge and share it on your social media sites.  We truly appreciate your support and understanding that our future must change for many generations to come.

I'll leave you with this video, narrated by the beautiful Carl Sagan.  Here's to our future!

Let me start my admitting that I initially just scrolled through this post looking at the amazing pictures of your art before reading. After taking the time to read about the project, I'm even more smitten. Your execution of it speaks literally to the quote. . .at least in my eyes. It's amazing, stunning, and speaks volumes about your word. I can't wait to see what else is to come!

Tina, first let me say that your assemblage project is a perfect representation of your thoughts about this journey and really shows that it is a bit of your heart out there for all to see. Next, thank you for putting this out there for us to participate in. This wonderful collaboration is teaching me so much about how the simplest gesture can mean so much and make a great difference.

Tina thank you for creating this project, and all the others. Somehow you've been instrumental in keeping my hand in creating! I love your assemblages and your growth over the past year has been truly incredible! I'm feeling how important our collective voices are going to be this year as I watch how things are changing.

Your creation caught my eye while I was checking out the Sustainable Souls project - am I am now your newest fan! I am enthralled by assemblages (and I confess, I have been hoarding stuff to make something for years) and the amazing ability artists like yourself have to manufacture something out of "nothing". Truly amazing!
